Guyana Awards (Canada)

Initiated in 2000 as part of the Guyana Independence celebrations, the Guyana Awards (Canada) recognize the outstanding contributions of individuals and organizations in the Guyanese Community toward the promotion and development of Guyana, Guyanese Heritage and Culture, and the achievement of excellence. The honourees also provide positive role models for the new generation of Guyanese born in Canada, and contribute to social cohesion, community development, integration and overall human development in Canada.

Building on its successes in previous years, the Guyana Awards Gala will make a strong statement about the high standards of leadership and excellence achieved by Guyanese and will instill a sense of pride in the Guyanese community. This premier event in the community has won tremendous support from Guyanese across Canada, and another sold out evening is anticipated.

The Guyana Awards (Canada) are held under the patronage of Danny Doobay, Honorary Consul General of Guyana in Toronto.

Global Partnership for Literacy (GPL) has been selected as the "Charity of Choice" to receive the proceeds from the 2009 Guyana Awards Gala. GPL is a Canadian-based non governmental organization (NGO) involved in the computerization of secondary and post-secondary schools in Guyana.
