The Guyana Awards Scholarship Program was established in 2008 by the Guyana Awards Council to support and profile the achievement of academic excellence by students of Guyanese Heritage. An independent panel of judges selected seven inaugural recipients from applications submitted to Council. The scholarships were presented at the Guyana Awards Gala held in May.

The Council recognizes and promotes outstanding contributions in the Guyanese Canadian community towards the achievement of excellence, and the promotion of Guyanese heritage and culture in Canada. One of the ultimate goals of the Guyana Awards Council is to develop a comprehensive National Scholarship program that benefits a wide range of students, while encouraging business partnerships in areas of mentoring programs and career counseling for scholarship recipients.

The Scholarship Program provides monetary awards to students of Guyanese heritage who are currently enrolled, or planning to enroll no later than the Fall of each year in a full-time diploma or degree program at an accredited school in Canada. Scholarship recipients will be selected based on a combination of high academic achievement, financial need and community involvement.
